Event Description
- Full Description:
- Two seminars are scheduled this week:
“Cathy Freeman at the Northcote Koori Mural: Photographs, Race, and Memory” is a talk by Dr Gary Osmond (UQ HMNS) and Dr Matthew Klugman (Victoria University). A dramatic photograph, published in 1994, depicted Australian athlete Cathy Freeman running at the Koori Mural in inner-north Melbourne beneath scenes of Aboriginal elders in chains in the late nineteenth century. The presentation explores the history of the mural photograph – its background, the image itself, and the aftermath of publication.
“Commercialisation in public schooling” is a talk by Dr Anna Hogan (UQ HMNS).
Commercial providers offer ready-made ‘solutions’ to the various education ‘problems’ schools are facing. These services include notably curriculum content, assessment services, digital learning, and professional development. This presentation details the extent of commercialisation, and documents the structural conditions and political values that have enabled the commercialisation of public schools in Australia.
