Event Description

Full Description:
Long Nambis na antap long maunten: Successful strategies for archaeology and cultural heritage projects in PNG.

Prof. Glenn Summerhayes, Anthropology & Archaeology, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand

Prof. Glenn Summerhayes has enjoyed a successful career undertaking field projects across Papua New Guinea - including in New Ireland, East Sepik, Manus and Central provinces - ranging from ground breaking work on the Lapita presence in PNG to the discovery of one of Australasia’s oldest cultural landscapes in the Ivane Valley of the Owen Stanley Range.

As well as undertaking numerous fieldwork projects, Glenn has also run successful training programs for PNG citizens in archaeology and cultural heritage and has made numerous appearances in PNG's local and national media.

This long term success is not a chance occurrence and is based on a careful process of community discussion, education and negotiation.

In this masterclass, of interest to anyone who plans to undertake field projects in PNG or surrounding regions, Glenn will reflect on his approach, including its successes and failures, using examples spanning a career that stretches from the coast to the mountain-tops.

Note: This masterclass is open to advanced students and established scholars in archaeology, anthropology, cultural heritage and related disciplines
