Event Description

Full Description:
Somewhere in France, Somewhere in Australia, 11 July 2014

2014 marks a century since the start of the First World War. On July 11, The University of Queensland and the Queensland Museum will host a symposium to explore the personal stories and experiences of Australians who served in France during the Great War.

Our focus is on material culture –personal effects, weaponry, diaries, letters, and photographs. Join French and Australian historians and museum curators as they discuss what these artefacts reveal about the nature of the conflict and the lives of service personnel.

This event will consist of two sessions. In the morning speakers will give us an insight into the connections forged between France and Australia during the war. Hear about, for example, the Mephisto, Queensland Museum’s unique A7V German tank retrieved at Villers-Bretonneux in 1918. In the afternoon, the focus will be on objects obtained by Australian servicemen and women stationed in France during the First World War and now in the hands of everyday Queenslanders. The stories behind these objects and the meanings they now have for the people who have inherited them will both surprise and move you.

HOW TO ATTEND THE EVENT:

This is a free event, open to all. However, seating is limited so please register your interest for the morning and/or the afternoon session by emailing us at somewhereinfrance@qm.qld.gov.au with your name and your contact details and you will be issued with an invitation and a program. RSVPs close Wednesday 28 June.

Primary support for the project has been provided by the Embassy of the Republic of France in Australia and the Institut Français. Somewhere in France, Somewhere in Australia has received the official recognition of the Mission du Centenaire (France’s official board for the commemoration of the First World War), whose official program was released by François Hollande, President of the French Republic, on 7 November 2013.
