Event Description

Full Description:
Topic: Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) - Safety Briefing
Facilitators: Jake Whitehead (Research Fellow; Civil Engineering), Harshini Ravindran (Manager, Transport Systems; Property and Facilities)
Recommended for: Safety Managers/WHSCs, HSW Division, HSW Committee Members

UQ Civil Engineering, P&F and the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads have partnered to deploy a Mobility-as-a-Service trial exclusively available to UQ students and staff for 12-months, starting from mid-2021. This trial is part of an iMOVE research project, which aims to provide insight into how the bundling of different transport services into monthly passes, accessible through a smartphone app, can help to support sustainable transport choices, and provide a more equitable and affordable approach to the pricing of transport.

As part of the MaaS trial, several transport services will be included in the scheme: public transport, shared electric scooters, shared electric bikes, taxis, car-sharing and ride-sharing. To maximise the benefits of the MaaS trial, in tandem UQ is planning to trial the expanded use of shared micro-mobility (e-scooters and e-bikes) on campus to improve active transport options to/from campus, and as well as within campus. Already a number of private micro-mobility devices are being used on campus, so this trial aims to proactively understand how these devices can be safely integrated into campus life, taking on board feedback from stakeholders across the UQ community. The primary benefits of supporting shared micro-mobility are: high-level of control over use and parking (geo-fencing, low speed zones, no ride zones), as well as greater affordability for staff and students.

The briefing session will provide an overview of the broader MaaS trial, and seek feedback and input into the draft plan that has been developed to safely trial shared micro-mobility on campus, including a risk assessment framework.
