Event Description

Full Description:
As humans continue to be peppered with disruptive social, economic and environmental events and change is the new constant, we are all talking about resilience and our capacity to adapt. But what about our ecosystems? What is their capacity for adaptation? What sort of framework do we need to assess ecosystem resilience? What is the value of long-term monitoring data in a changing world? How will we assess the ability of an ecosystem to recover from disturbances without shifting to an alternative state or losing function and services? Understanding and assessing resilience is essential to forecasting how terrestrial ecosystems will respond to global climate change and increasing human-driven impacts.
Presenters:
Dr Ian Cresswell. What do we mean by resilience and what do we know about the multiple factors that interact to determine resilience capacity?
Dr Anna Richards. Is it possible to develop a framework for assessing ecosystem resilience?
Professor Lindsay Hutley. What we can learn about ecosystem resilience from long term monitoring – stories from the North Australian Tropical Transect (NATT) gradient, which extends ~1000km south from Darwin.
