Event Description

Full Description:
For those of us who do not spend our weekends catching up on the latest issue of The Lancet or other medical journals, much of the general information we consume about health and medical research is via news or social media. But how can we be sure of the quality of the information we consume? How can we avoid falling prey to ‘clickbait’—attention-grabbing but possibly fake news about these, well, life and death matters? This panel explores the ways in which media representations can frame or bias our thinking about health issues from an individual and community perspective, and what kind of media literacy skills we need to become critical consumers of news and social media.

Join us for an event with guest speakers Associate Professor Maree Toombs, Professor Peter Greste, and journalist Sean Parnell to explore the issues surrounding fake news and the socio-political consequences.
