University of Queensland Solar Racing Team members will be among judges and scrutineers at the 1998 ENERGEX Model Solar Car Challenge at the Gold Coast this weekend.
More than 80 model solar car teams from primary and secondary schools from as far away as Cairns will compete in the event at St Hilda's School, High Street, Southport on Saturday September 19 from 8.30am to 4.30pm and Sunday, September 20 from 9am to 2.30pm.
The challenge aims to encourage students to learn more about the potential of solar power through the design, construction and testing of a solar-powered model car. It is held on a 100-metre dual lane, figure-eight track. Cars negotiate the track like a slot car.
The University's vehicle, SunShark, which receives ENERGEX sponsorship, will be on display at the event as an inspiration for the junior racers. Professional racing driver Craig Lowndes from the Mobil Holden Racing Team will attend the finals on Sunday to meet students and present trophies.

The University's Solar Racing Team has begun gearing up for its next challenge - the Sydney to Melbourne CitiPower Sunrace in January next year, and will unveil its new design in the next few months.
