The University of Queensland is planning to expand its extensive range of courses to meet student interests in 1999 and in the next millennium.

This expansion includes opening the new UQ Ipswich campus, with numerous courses especially designed to take advantage of new technologies available now and in the future.

University Academic Registrar Neville Lamb said with more than 4000 subjects and over 200 programs available, the University had the State's most comprehensive range of high quality courses both in its professional degrees and in Arts and Science.

Proposed additions for 1999 include:

- Bachelor of Psychological Science (St Lucia), a new four year degree designed to prepare students for careers in psychology and for postgraduate applied training or research. It will provide students with a comprehensive education in the main areas of the scientific discipline of psychology.

- Bachelor of Environmental Management (St Lucia and Gatton). Students can select one of the following specialisations: natural systems and wildlife management, rural systems management, sustainable development or tropical forestry. The choice of specialisation will determine which campus students will attend.

- Bachelor of Environmental Science (St Lucia). This course has three specialisations - ecology, geochemistry, and natural resource science - and is being offered through the collaboration of three faculties.

- Bachelor of Business - Leisure Management (Ipswich Bremer TAFE campus) which will focus on the provision and marketing of leisure services including theme park and events management, rural recreation resource management, regional community recreation, and sports management.

- Bachelor of Information Environments (UQ Ipswich). This course will produce the designers, architects and implementors of the highly sophisticated, networked, distributed, computer-based information environments of the future. Students will receive training in three core areas: design, with particular reference to the design of 'virtual' (computer-based) artefacts, information technology; and organisational structure and communication.

- Bachelor of Electronic Commerce (UQ Ipswich) - seeks to provide students with a broad knowledge of core commerce and business related subjects, together with in-depth knowledge of information systems subjects that are needed to acquire expertise in electronic commerce systems.

- Bachelor of Business (Communication) (UQ Ipswich). This new 3 year degree will provide individuals with the analytic and practical skills to manage change and improve business communication practices now and into the 21st Century. Advanced concentrations are available in: Organisational Communication; Managing Change Processes; Public Relations; Corporate Knowledge Management; and Electronic Communication Process Management.

- Bachelor of Contemporary Studies (UQ Ipswich) is structured around five focus areas, Media, Communication and Change; Language and Culture; Contemporary Australia and the World; Ethics and Future Challenges; Nature, Technology and Culture, combined with a set of skills based subjects and professional practice and project work components.

- Bachelor of Social Science (in applied communication and development studies) (UQ Ipswich). This degree provides a career-focused qualification for students interested in working on issues relating to people, social policies and the community. The Bachelor of Social Science is concerned with how people live and work together, and how to improve the community.

Applied communications involves studying theories and approaches, and developing skills relevant to applying communication to community and personal advancement. It develops skills which will assist graduates to work in a variety of local organisations, firms and agencies.

Development Studies is concerned with theories and approaches of urban, rural, international and indigenous people in achieving sustainable development of their communities. Students will study various aspects of development including project planning, management, implementation, and evaluation.

- Bachelor of Education (graduate entry). The Bachelor of Education (BEd) is available to students who have completed a degree with two teaching subjects that will satisfy teacher registration requirements. The degree is normally a four semester course which may be completed over one and a half years (UQ Ipswich).

The course prepares students to teach in diverse communities and enhances students skills in instructional design, communications, assessment of learning, and instructional use of information technology. Teaching placements (or practicum) will be within the Ipswich area.

- Bachelor of Behavioural Studies (not offered until the year 2000) (UQ Ipswich).
This degree is currently under development and will focus on human growth and human behaviour. Students will develop understandings and skills for working in careers in education and human services.

In the year 2000, courses previously offered through the Bremer TAFE and Gatton campuses in the Bachelor of Business (General, Leisure Management, Property Studies, Tourism Management, and Travel Management) will be transferred to the UQ Ipswich campus.

Students should keep in mind that opportunities for a number of new dual degree programs will also be possible for 1999 and that some courses for 1999 are still subject to final approval.

More detailed information will be available in the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre's (QTAC) Queensland Tertiary Courses 1999 booklet, in schools in June, and the University's recently published 1999 Undergraduate Prospectus.
