Handling Roman artefacts, trying on ancient Greek clothes and playing Egyptian board-games are just some of the free fun activities The University of Queensland’s RD Milns Antiquities Museum is offering these school holidays.
From Monday 13 to Friday 24 January 2014, the Museum will welcome parents and children to explore a variety of ancient artefacts on display and join in special papyrus-making workshops.
Museum Director Dr Janette McWilliam said the school holiday program would appeal to budding archaeologists, curators and adventurers.
“Some of our most interesting objects will be out of their cases, giving visitors a unique opportunity to hold history in their hands,” Dr McWilliam said.
“We have over 7000 separate artefacts that span almost 3500 years of history. They are in a variety of materials, including stone, pottery, metalware, and glass,” she said.
The RD Milns Antiquities Museum promotes the study of the classical civilisations of Greece, Rome, Egypt, and the Near East through their material remains. It holds the major collection of Classical Mediterranean Antiquities in Queensland.
University students and academic researchers use the Museum for research and study, while members of the public, including primary and secondary school students, regularly attend special activities and workshops.
The papyrus-making workshops will run from 10 am – 11 am on Wednesday 15, Thursday 16 and Friday 17 January. The cost is $10 per person and, with places filling fast, bookings are essential
General visitors are welcome at the Museum on Level 2 of the University's Michie Building from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
