Three University of Queensland researchers have been elected as Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science recognising the global impact of their work.
Emerita Professor Mary Garson AM, Professor Glenn King, and Professor Lianzhou Wang, are among 24 of the nation’s distinguished scientists to be elected to the Academy.
Emerita Professor Mary Garson has dedicated her career to understanding the chemical structures of compounds naturally produced by marine animals, such as marine sponges and molluscs, and their roles in the animals’ survival. Her research contributes to the discovery of new treatments against cancers and infectious diseases.
Professor Glenn King is known for his pioneering research into the use of venoms from predators, such as spiders, scorpions and centipedes, leading to the development of environmentally friendly insecticides which are safe for humans and animals. He is now researching the use of venom to develop treatments for conditions such as heart disease and stroke.
Professor Lianzhou Wang is a world leader in materials science and chemical engineering. His work focuses on developing materials and technologies that advance the global clean energy sector, including solar energy conversion and storage systems.
The new Fellows will be formally admitted to the Academy at Science at the Shine Dome in September 2024.
