The University of Queensland Football Club and Kenmore FC have announced their formal amalgamation, creating one of the largest football clubs in Queensland – the new UQFC.

UQFC president Ben Gordon said both clubs were thrilled with this new development and the opportunities it opened up for both junior and senior players.

The merge has already produced one significant outcome for the new UQFC, enabling it to achieve entry into new 2013 Brisbane Premier League, along with eleven other select clubs announced by Football Brisbane.

“While maintaining our place in the top flight competition in 2013 was the impetus for the
merge, the process revealed so many more benefits to both clubs," Mr Gordon said.

In the end, securing our position in this competition turned out to be the icing on the cake, rather than the only reason."

Securing entry into the 2013 Brisbane Premier League will see UQFC field premier grade players across eight classes - U12, U13, U14, U15, U16, U18 and two senior men’s competitions.

“Certainly amongst our senior members, the merge has awakened a sense of responsibility
they have towards nurturing grassroots football," Mr Gordon said.

"Similar to its rugby, cricket and AFL counterparts, UQFC now joins the ranks of many major interstate universities in supporting junior players.

“It is a huge moment in the history of both clubs.

"I do not think the small, but diverse group of students that formed the club back in 1955 ever imagined it would one day cater for almost 1400 members, let alone juniors.

“The University has been incredibly supportive of football on campus, with the offer to use
the premiere facilities at the field 5a stadium for our top men’s matches, making it possible to
compete in the premier league competition.

“2012 has been a strong year for both former clubs with 24 of our combined 34 competitive
teams going through to finals, and with acceptance into the new Brisbane Premier League,
we’re looking forward to an exciting year in 2013,” Mr Gordon said.

The club’s seven playing fields will still be maintained at Kenmore and St Lucia and as the
former clubs shared maroon as their primary colour, existing members should expect little
disruption transitioning into 2013.

The UQFC interim executive committee consists of:
• Ben Gordon, President
• David Smith, Vice-President
• Helen Dalgliesh, Treasurer
• Luke Smith, Secretary
