The University of Queensland’s St John College will host the Inaugural Sir Zelman Cowen Oration on Thursday, March 1, 2012.

The Oration, this year themed Universities and Contemporary Society, will be delivered by Dr Don Markwell, The Warden of Rhodes House, Oxford.

Reverend Professor and Warden of St John’s College, John Morgan said Sir Zelman Cowen was an inspirational mentor, as well as an academic.

“Sir Zelman Cowen not only touched the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of people at an individual level throughout his lifetime, he was also an academic and public figure.”

Chairman of the oration will be the Hon. Sit Llewellyn Edwards AC. The event begins at 7pm tonight and will be held in the Great Hall of St John’s college.

A great influence at UQ, Sir Zelman Cowen is credited for his involvement in the formation of the Mayne String Trio and the building of the organ in the Mayne Centre.
