A learning facility at The University of Queensland (UQ), following on from a Regional Commendation in March, won a State Commendation for Interior Architecture at the recent 2011 Australian Institute of Architects Awards.

Ceccato Hall and Associates Architects, which designed UQ’s Gatton Lecture Theatre Room 106 in Building 8117, nominated the project for the Interior Architecture section in the Queensland awards.

UQ’s Director of Property and Facilities, Alan Egan, said the interior design had transformed a traditional lecture theatre into a modern learning facility with the latest audio-visual technology.

“It is an innovative reworking of the original lecture space, which has turned it into a welcoming and contemporary facility,” Mr Egan said.

“The design materials and adjustable light levels combined with state-of-the-art technology delivers a space that will enhance the learning experience for another generation of Gatton students.”

The theatre provides a tiered lecture theatre with 204 individual seats, as well as two wheelchair-access writing tablets.

Peter Wolff, Architect, and Associate of Ceccato Hall and Associates Architects, said it was wonderful to receive recognition from peers and the industry for the UQ Gatton lecture theatre project.

“Such results do not of course happen by chance…and we would be most remiss if we did not again extend our appreciation for the University’s trust, confidence, support and participation, which ultimately facilitated the realisation of this exceptional outcome,” Mr Wolff said.

“We want to continue to extend our mutual relationships with the UQ team, in the service of excellence and value, for the University, it’s students, clients, leadership and beyond. It’s great to be part of it.”

Mr Wolff also thanked Ms Iranthi Cabraal from UQ’s Property and Facilities- Strategic and General Construction- for her assistance during the design and building process.
