While some of the world’s biggest tennis stars were in action last week at the Brisbane International, a host of the state’s hottest junior talent was also on court at The University of Queensland chasing their own tennis glory.

The annual UQ Age Championships at the UQ Tennis Centre saw more than 200 youngsters aged 8 – 16 compete, with more than $2,000 in prizes awarded to the winners and runners up in each event.

As part of Tennis Australia’s Optus Junior Tour, the UQ Age Championships also gave players the chance to earn bronze national ranking points for their performances in the tournament.

This year’s UQ Age Championships mark the tenth consecutive year that the event has been hosted at the UQ Tennis Centre.

The centre’s Venue Manager, Alex Reeman-Clark, said the tournament was one of the premier junior events of the year.

“With the tournament coinciding with the Brisbane International, all the youngsters are really geared up to put in a good performance,” Mr Reeman-Clark said.

“Many of the kids have just seen their favourite players compete at the Brisbane International so they’re in a great mindset to compete themselves for tennis glory.

“Plus, the tournament is also a great lead in to our other coaching and fixture programs which kick off this month and are always really popular at this time of year.”

The UQ Tennis Centre runs coaching and fixture programs for children and adults throughout the year.
