UQ Science has recently commissioned three new boats to expand its research and teaching in aquatic and marine science.
The $300,000 investment has seen new boats delivered to Heron Island Research Station, Moreton Bay Research Station and St Lucia campus.
“These purpose built boats will bolster the University fleet, replacing older boats, and providing superior facilities to researchers at the research stations and the main campus,” David Harris, Manager of the UQ Research Stations, said.
“The new boat based at Moreton Bay Research Station will act as both a teaching and research platform, enhancing the learning outcomes of undergraduate courses while still providing enhanced research capabilities.”
The 5.8 m rigid inflatable boat will allow groups of up to 12 people to get hands on experience and explore the diverse marine ecosystems located around North Stradbroke Island and Moreton Bay.
The other the two boats, based at Heron Island Research Station and St Lucia, will increase current researcher capabilities for those that require a solid and stable work platform.
The new 5.95 m boats have been designed with diving and fishing in mind, and will accommodate teams of up to six researchers, enhancing the efficiency and output of field trips.
These two boats will also increase the scope of possible research as they feature built-in seawater pumps enabling researchers to collect and maintain live animals and specimens on board.
Funding was provided from the Faculty and central funds.
