UQ’s rowing program has proven itself on the international arena with a successful campaign at the World University Rowing Championships in Hungary last month.

UQ student Francesca Paterson and fellow UQ Boat Club rower Peta Edington claimed bronze in the women’s double scull behind Lithuania and Estonia.

Ms Paterson said the racing conditions took a terrible turn on the day of the final.

“We had a strong headwind blowing up along the course so it was a long race against the wind,” Ms Paterson said.

“I was really happy with our result – it was a fantastic end to a really enjoyable event,” she said.

The pair was coached by UQ Boat Club Head Coach Andrew Cruickshank, who also oversees the high performance rowing program at UQ Sport.

Mr Cruickshank said the girls performed exceptionally given the calibre of rowers at the championships.

“Many of the athletes from other countries have been competing at a senior level on the World Cup circuit and at previous senior world championships,” Mr Cruickshank said.

UQ student Angus Morton also performed admirably in the men’s lightweight single scull to finish 10th.

Mr Morton spent much of the season in Europe and competed at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in England prior to the championships.

UQ Sport would like to congratulate Mr Cruickshank and his rowers on their fantastic efforts in Hungary.
