The University of Queensland is celebrating its first 100 years with a free community day at its St Lucia campus on April 18.

There will be activities and entertainment for all ages and interests, including live music in the Great Court, international food stalls, health and wellbeing demonstrations, art exhibitions and a Writers' Hub featuring David Malouf, Kate Morton, Nick Earls, John Birmingham, Janette Turner Hospital and Rosamond Siemon.

Iconic Brisbane band, The Riptides, will be reforming for the University's special milestone. The band headlines a full program of musical performances, including Montpelier, John Meyer and the UQ String Orchestra.

The University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Greenfield, encourages everyone to come along and join in the day's fun and festivities.

"This is part of UQ saying 'thank you' to the community for the enormous support we have received over the years.

"Countless people have helped make UQ what it is today, and input from the community will have a strong influence over UQ in its second century.

"So I look forward to welcoming a great diversity of people, including many first time visitors.

"People from all walks are invited to take advantage of UQ's contributions to education and research, as well as the campus' sport and recreation facilities and cultural assets - like the UQ Art Museum, the Antiquities Museum and the Anthropology Museum."

Celebrations will commence at 9am, and will finish at 6.30pm after a 45-minute finale dusk spectacle, featuring the renowned Deep Blue orchestra and set against the backdrop of the iconic Forgan Smith Building.
