The University of Queensland’s Heron Island Research Station is temporarily closed due to Cyclone Ului, which is hovering in the Coral Sea.

As a precautionary measure, Station guests and staff are being evacuated today and tomorrow by catamaran, and will be accommodated in the Gladstone region.

Research equipment has been secured, and important samples are being removed.

Current conditions are not too bad — 60km winds and a 4m swell, but are anticipated to degrade by Saturday.

The cyclone is expected to cross the coast at the weekend. The Station hopes to be back in operation next week, depending on the weather.
