UQ Ipswich will donate a laptop to local SeniorNet member, John le Poer Trench, tomorrow, Thursday, September 10, so he can continue with his computer training.

John is a resident at Colthup Nursing Home and is an active member of SeniorNet and receives fortnightly computer training sessions. Vi Jorgensen, Public Relations Officer for SeniorNet, contacted UQ Ipswich recently to enquire if a laptop could be donated to John as his computer no longer worked.

Jenny Geaves is one of the trainers for SeniorNet and attends fortnightly computer classes with John.

“John has a large family that reside all around the world, and I assist him in sending emails to his family so they can all keep in touch”, said Jenny.

No only will the laptop keep John up to date with his family, but Jenny insists that it is also has positive impact on his day to day life.

“Using the computer is great therapy for him and helps him maintain his independence and skills”.

SeniorNet has been a supporter of Colthup Home since 1985, and receives free corporate membership. Training Coordinator Ken Curwen visits the home weekly to assist the residences with any computer problems they might encounter, while also providing training and encouragement to all members.

UQ Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Rix was very supportive the donation of the computer to SeniorNet when approached.

“UQ Ipswich is happy to provide this laptop to John and SeniorNet and supports the role that SeniorNet pays in the local community,” he said.

UQ’s involvement with SeniorNet came about when the UQ Boilerhouse Community Engagement Centre opened in 2006, and SeniorNet has regularly utilised the community computer rooms on campus training. The Boilerhouse has also provided assistance to SeniorNet by conducting surveys amongst its members to ensure their needs were being met.
