UQ’s new concurrent Diplomas in music and languages are set to strike a chord with students looking to further their qualifications while studying a bachelor degree.

The two Diplomas will be offered by the Faculty of Arts in 2010 and will be on show at the UQ St Lucia Open Day (today, August 2).

The Diploma in Languages will be offered through the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies and will allow students to study Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish.

The School is recognised as one of Australia’s leading language institutions and has designed the Diploma to suit beginner as well as advanced speakers in other languages.

The Diploma in Music, offered through the School of Music, includes two plans: Music Studies and Ensemble, which requires an audition, or Popular Music and Music Technology.

Studies will address musicology, music techniques, aural and ensemble performance skills as well as different genres of music in the context of technologies which enable performance, recording and distribution.

Students enrolled in the Diploma will have the opportunity to perform as part of the School of Music concert program, including major performances at the Queensland Performing Arts Complex.

Students wishing to enrol in the Diplomas can apply directly to UQ once they have received their offer of a place in a bachelor degree. Continuing UQ students may also apply.

UQ Faculty of Arts Executive Dean Professor Richard Fotheringham said the concurrent Diplomas provided students with an opportunity to enhance their study opportunities at UQ, while broadening their career horizons.

“The Faculty of Arts is very excited to be offering the new Diplomas as a way for students to value-add to their degree,” Professor Fotheringham said.

“Whether they are studying Architecture, Pharmacy, or Engineering, the Diplomas enable students to pursue their passion in music or languages and receive an additional academic qualification while studying for their bachelors degree.”

In addition to information sessions on the Diplomas, the Faculty of Arts will also offer Open Day visitors the opportunity to discover the diverse range of Humanities courses available at UQ.

There will also be a tour of the UQ Art Museum and the RD Milns Antiquities Museum.

The University of Queensland is also offering students the opportunity to enrol in a new U21 Diploma in Global Issues.

The Diploma will be part of UQ’s Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences and will be offered by the Universitas 21 network to students of the Universities of Queensland and Melbourne (Australia), British Columbia (Canada), Hong Kong (China), Nottingham (United Kingdom), Lund (Sweden) and Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico). Students will need to have completed a year of study to be eligible to apply.

Free parking is available on campus on Open Day and there will also be regular bus, train and CityCat services. For transport information visit www.translink.qld.gov.au.
