As the proportion of women studying and graduating from architecture programs rises, there is a growing interest in the architectural practices established by women, the nature of their works and the trajectories that these practices have taken.

The University of Queensland’s 'City Thinking: Architecture Talks' program next week will draw together three established and talented architects to talk about their work and their firms.

It will be on Tuesday, May 5 at 6pm at the Abel Smith Lecture Theatre, Campbell Road, The University of Queensland's St Lucia campus. The talks are free and open to the public.

Susan Dugdale from Alice Springs, Deb Fisher from Cairns and Elizabeth Watson-Brown of Brisbane will talk of their built design work, their current projects and the trajectory of their firms.

All three have distinctive practices characterised by close and attentive work with clients and users, the application of clear and strong design values and, importantly, an enjoyment of the process of bringing ideas into life as buildings.

Recent works by Susan Dugdale Associates include the Institute for Aboriginal Development; and health, childcare, commercial and residential projects in Alice Springs as well as major projects for remote Papunya and Yuendumu communities.

Deb’s practice, Fisher Buttrose Architects, also has a strong reputation for sensitive design of tropical architecture for indigenous and non-Indigenous clients across the range of cultural, educational and residential buildings.

Elizabeth Watson-Brown Architects undertake a broad range of social and community projects, institutional and urban design in addition to the exquisite residential projects for which they are well known.

The friendship of the three architects has led to a casual network of informal advice, shared study and professional support.

They will share their work and their experiences, and hopefully encourage the next generation of architects to take the bold step into starting their own practices.
