A number of people associated with The University of Queensland were honoured in the Queen's Birthday honours list announced yesterday.

The University has been notified of the following honours.

COMPANION (AC) IN THE GENERAL DIVISION OF THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA

• Australian media entrepreneur Dr Reg Grundy OBE, for service to the entertainment and television industry, to the promotion of Australia internationally, and to the community through philanthropic contributions to a range of organisations. Dr Grundy was awarded an honorary UQ Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2004.

OFFICER (AO) IN THE GENERAL DIVISION OF THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA

• Former UQ Senator (1992-2005) and Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane since 1992 The Most Reverend Dr John Bathersby, DD, for service to the Catholic Church in Australia, particularly as Archbishop of Brisbane, and to the community through the promotion of ecumenical dialogue. Dr Bathersby holds an honorary Doctorate of Letters from UQ.

• QIMR Director and Conjoint Professor in the School of Population Health Professor Michael Good for service to medical research, particularly in the fields of infectious disease immunology and vaccine technology, through leadership roles at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research and contributions to education.

MEMBER (AM) IN THE GENERAL DIVISION OF THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA

• Foundation Professor of Nursing in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at UQ, Professor Elizabeth Davies, for service to nursing, particularly in the areas of nurse and midwifery education, and to the community through a range of health-related organisations and advisory bodies.

Emeritus Professor David Doddrell, who headed the Centre for Magnetic Resonance at UQ from 1986 until 2006, for service to science in the field of magnetic resonance as an academic and researcher.

• Part-time UQ tutor in orthodontics, 1978-1980, 1987-1991 and 1991-1994, Dr Robert Greenhill RFD, for service to public sector dentistry, particularly through the development of specialist orthodontic services and interdisciplinary management of patients with cleft lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies, to dental education, and to professional organisations.

• UQ graduate and research fellow in the Centre for Indigenous Health, School of Population Health, Dr Janet Hammill, for service to the community through health services for Indigenous women and children and research into the effects of foetal alcohol syndrome.

• UQ graduate Ms Carmel Hattch, for services to paediatric and outreach nursing, to the welfare of Indigenous children in the Northern Territory, and as a foster parent.

• Honorary Professor at UQ since 2006, Professor Patrick O'Keefe, for service to the protection and repatriation of cultural property and heritage, and service to the law as a lecturer and author, and to legal education.

• Head, Department of Anatomy, UQ, 1986-1989; and Senior Lecturer and Lecturer, 1973-1985, Professor Anthony (Tony) Parker, for service to sports medicine and exercise science as an academic, researcher and author and through executive and advisory roles with professional organisations.

• The Principal, Cromwell College, UQ, 1973-1975, Dr John Roulston, for service to education, particularly through administrative and teaching roles in the independent schools sector, to the development of schools-based drug prevention programs and contributions to professional organisations.

• Former UQ Senator 1999-2001, and UQ graduate Dr Marie Siganto, for service to the arts and education through contributions to artistic, cultural, educational and multicultural organisations, and as a benefactor and supporter of professional development programs. Dr Siganto was a staff member of the then Department of English for several years.

• Current Professor of Clinical Surgery, Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and current Head of the discipline of Surgery, UQ Professor Russell Stitz RFD, for service to medicine in the field of colorectal surgery, to the development of surgical education and training programs, and through leadership roles in professional organisations.

MEDAL (OAM) IN THE GENERAL DIVISION OF THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA

Dr Grahame Brown, deceased, for service to dentistry as an educator in endodontics and through the Royal Australian Army Dental Corps, and to gemmology. Grahame was founder of the School of Dentistry’s Postgraduate Endodontics Program and Discipline Head of Endodontics from the late 1950s to 1998.
