UQ Business School will host 22 secondary schools from the Brisbane and Ipswich regions at the annual “Engaging Business Conference” next month.

The conference offers year 12 students the opportunity to experience “a day as a university student”, and will be held on Thursday, July 19 and Friday, July 20 at the UQ Ipswich Campus.

Spending the day at the Ipswich Campus, the students will attend lectures on a wide range of topics including international business, climate change issues in business, tourism, accounting and social marketing.

“In its fifth year, the conference has grown to be an important annual event in the students’ and schools’ calendar”, said Professor Peter Green, UQ Business School Coordinator of the Ipswich Campus.

“It gives the students a timely introduction into university life, given that they are about the make important decisions on their futures.”

The "Engaging Business Conference’ is part of a conference series hosted by UQ Business School for high school students.

On June 6 the School hosted the “Buzz with Business Conference” at the Ipswich campus, attended by more than 160 year 10 students from nine high schools in the Ipswich and surrounding regions.

Presenters from diverse business fields gave the students insight into topics such as:
• “How to be an Entrepreneur” by Chris Hindle, Vice-President Sales & Operations Foot Locker Asia Pacific;
• “The Law of Negligence” by Dr Nick James of the TC Beirne School of Law; and
• “Is Our Future Ubiquitous?” by Dr Paul O’Brien of the UQ Business School.

Representatives from the accounting accreditation bodies CPA and ICAA also gave a presentation on the various finance, accounting and business careers available to the students in the business world today.

During the “lectures”, students were asked to vote online, and through SMS technology, giving a good insight into how the business world works in today’s technological environment.

“The teachers were very enthusiastic about the value of the day for their students, and agreed that what they learnt today would be carried into the classroom when they return to school,” Professor Green said.
