International Women's Day announcement

Seven outstanding academically able women will be awarded Fellowships at a reception next week at The University of Queensland.

Ms Bonny Barry MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education, Employment, Training and the Arts will present certificates to the recipients of the 2007 Australian Federation of University Women-Queensland (AFUW-Q) Fellowships.

The presentations will be made at a luncheon at the Freda Bage room, Women’s College on Wednesday, March 14 at 12 noon-2 pm.

The AFUW-Q through its Fellowship Fund Branch, the Fellowship Fund Incorporated (FFI) has awarded 160 Fellowships since 1972 to women from across the world.

“The fellowship we award now is about $21,000 a year and currently we give six to women who do postgraduate studies,” President of FFI, Agnes Whiten, said.

“We get applications from graduates from different parts of the world.

"Australian graduates from a Queensland university can go to universities overseas or elsewhere in Australia while women from other countries are required to study at a Queensland university.”

Awardees are:

— Freda Bage fellowship: Sani Jahnke, BSc (Hons I) graduate from UQ, who is in her second year of a PhD in bioengineering with a project on adult stem cells as healing substrate.

— Molly Budtz-Olsen Commemorative Award: Laura Davidoff, an American student who is undertaking a Masters at UQ in economics, studying the history and economics of stolen wages.

— Audrey Jorss Commemorate Award: Shih-Ning Then, who holds a BSc and LLB from UQ (Hons I in Law), and who will undertake a Masters in medical/bioscience ethics and law at the University of Edinburgh.

— Betty Patterson Commemorative Award: Gabrielle Appelby, an LLB (Hons I) from UQ who is enrolled at the University of Melbourne for a Masters degree in constitutional law in the Asia/Pacific region.

This year a special award will be given to UQ's History division for a student to write the history of the AFUW-Q which was established in 1922. Megan McCarthy, the recipient of the Australian Federation of University Women-UQ Fellowship Fund will work towards a Master of Philosophy degree.

The Commemorative Fellowships are named after members who pioneered the gown hiring activity which started at the Women’s College when the late Molly Budtz-Olsen was the principal.

FFI runs the Academic Dress Hire Service and the income from this activity and from investments enable the group to offer the Fellowships. The University of Queensland generously provides space for the gown hire service to operate.

The Australian Federation of University Women is affiliated with the International Federation of University Women, a voluntary, not- for-profit organisation of more than 180,000 women university graduates in 66 national federations and associations throughout the world.
