The impressive Building 8 at The University of Queensland Ipswich Campus has received another award for its architectural excellence.

Architect Hamilton Wilson of Wilson Architects won a commendation for the Ipswich Campus` Building 8 at the recent Royal Australian Institute of Architecture (RAIA) Awards (Brisbane region winners) ceremony.

Mr Wilson was commended for the $7.5 million Building 8, which was conceived by Wilson Architects as a place for interaction between people and the printed and digital technologies, with supporting student resources.

He said the building was designed to represent a “village market square”.

It houses the Library, the Student Centre, Health Services, The Equity Office, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit, the Student Union, learning advisers, counsellors, the disability adviser, Chaplaincy, welfare officer and the Office of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor Ipswich Professor Alan Rix congratulated Wilson Architects on their commendation and wished them success for the State Awards to be held on July 28.

He said Building 8 reinforced the community hub of the existing campus and represented a unique place to interact with people and the printed and digital media, student services, counselling and health services.

Wilson Architects also won Building of the Year for the $24 million Sir James Foots building at the St Lucia Campus, which opened last year and houses the University`s Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI), the Earth Systems Science Computational Centre (ESSCC) and the Collaborative Learning Centre (CLC).

Wilson Architects also received a commendation for their sensitive conversion of Mayne Hall into the James and Mary Emelia Mayne Centre, which opened in 2004 with a significant donation from The Atlantic Philanthropies.

Other UQ projects to feature in the awards were the UQ Chemistry Building lab fitout (m3architecture – architect Michael Christensen) and the Roche Laboratories at the Heron Island Research Station (Dimitriou Architects and Interiors).
