Adjunct Professor Kerry O’Brien of ABC’s The 7.30 Report will discuss Responsible Journalism in a keynote address at The University of Queensland on Friday, April 15.
Professor O’Brien will participate in a free public seminar from 2pm to 5pm at The Innes Room, UQ Union, St Lucia.
His address will be followed by a panel discussion including Director of Channel Nine News Lee Anderson; Journalist-in-residence at UQ’s School of Journalism and Communication Bruce Grundy; and General Manager of BBS Public Relations Amanda Newberry.
In a 39-year career Kerry O`Brien has worked in newspapers, magazines, wire service, and television, as a reporter, feature writer, political and foreign correspondent, columnist, documentary maker, program presenter, and interviewer. He has also experienced politics from the inside as a media adviser.
Since December 1995 he has been National Editor and Presenter of the ABC`s flagship current affairs program, The 7.30 Report. He also anchors the ABC`s election telecasts.
He has interviewed many world leaders including Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher, and Mikhail Gorbachev, and a diverse range of other top international figures. He has won many awards including the top award in journalism, the Gold Walkley.
Kerry O`Brien has recently been appointed Adjunct Professor in the School of Journalism and Communication, at The University of Queensland.
Professor Michael Bromley of the School of Journalism and Communication will moderate the discussion.
Professor O’Brien’s free public lecture is hosted by the University’s School of Journalism and Communication and Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies (CCCS).
• The Centre will also host a free seminar on April 5 on German novelist Irmgard Keun (1905-1982).
The presenter will be Dr Geoff Wilkes, who is a lecturer in German Studies at UQ, and was a Faculty Research Fellow at the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies in second semester 2004. His primary research interest is 20th-century German literature. He is currently completing a monograph on Irmgard Keun, and has an article—"On a Railroad to Nowhere: Irmgard Keun`s D-Zug dritter Klasse"—forthcoming in the November 2005 issue of German Studies Review.
