Whether it’s live surgery, weight watching tips for pets or singing whales, there will be something for every animal lover at The University of Queensland’s (UQ) Open Day this Sunday, August 1.

From 9.30am UQ’s Small Animal Clinic at the St Lucia campus will throw open its doors to the public offering a bumper program of guided tours, free veterinary information sessions, interactive displays and giveaways.

The guided tours will depart the front of the Clinic every half hour and include live surgery, ultrasound, endoscope and radiograph displays and an inspection of the Clinic’s fauna ward where sick and injured wildlife are treated.

The tours will be complemented by a series of information sessions presented by the Clinic’s own veterinary experts and covering a range of common and quirky animal topics like Hear Boy! Deafness in Dogs, Tick Talk – Why Won’t he Walk?, First Aid – When the Fur Flies, and Pudgy Pets – Obesity in Dogs.

Animal behaviour expert Dr Cam Day will be a special guest, discussing the Paranoid Behaviour of Peculiar Pets and there will also be tips on caring for your cat or new puppy.

The University’s Great Court will be home to a suitably giant-sized display on humpback whales; with whale expert Dr Michael Noad on hand to discuss the research work he and his team are currently involved in assessing whale populations during their migration north and their use of songs to communicate.

Faculty Marketing Coordinator Brad Henderson said Open Day at the UQ Vet Clinic would be a great day out for pet owners, animal lovers and others interested in animal health and welfare.

“You won’t get this opportunity anywhere but at UQ on August 1. There is simply no other place where you can go behind the surgery doors, see such a comprehensive display of veterinary science in practice and talk to such a wide range of animal experts,” Mr Henderson said.

“Everyone is welcome, it’s all free and you will see and learn plenty.”

The University of Queensland’s Small Animal Clinic is located at Therapies Road via Chancellor’s Place, St Lucia. Full details of the Clinic’s program on the day can be found in the 2004 UQ Open Days Program available on the day or via the Internet at www.uq.edu.au/opendays/
