British track legend Steve Ovett will kick-start Brisbane’s fun run season when he joins budding runners at The University of Queensland this Friday. (May 2.)
The former world record holder will inspire runners with his journey to Olympic champion as part of a unique seminar series promoting healthy participation in major running events in 2003.
The four-part seminar series, titled “Fun Runners to Marathoners”, will give runners of all abilities an insight into the secrets and training patterns behind the success of top athletes.
Commonwealth Games silver medallist Krishna Stanton and Pat Clohessy (coach of Australian champions Rob De Castella and Shaun Creighton) will also be guests throughout the series to pass on training patterns, advice and motivation.
Ms Stanton, who rose from Australian junior champion in 1500m, 3000m and cross-country to represent at both Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games, will also present a female athlete segment at the final three seminars.
UQ head athletics coach Mr Clohessy said the running seminars would provide valuable advice for runners of all abilities.
“These seminars are not simply about competing at an elite level. The training tips and secrets covered will be equally valuable whether you’re a junior athlete, starting out or aiming for a personal best in your next race,” Mr Clohessy said.
“The seminars will present practical advice on everything from training cycles and programs to tapering and recovery runs.
Mr Clohessy said the dates and content of the seminar series has been set to focus on major fun runs during the year.
“The aim is to help runner’s target major fun runs like the Gold Coast and Bridge to Brisbane and put them in good stead once the starter’s gun goes off,” Mr Clohessy said.
The cost for each seminar is $10, with the seminars to be held at the UQ Athletics Centre, Sir William McGregor Dr, St Lucia.
