Celebrated Australian author, Bryce Courtenay AM, officially launched a new reading collection at The University of Queensland`s Gatton Campus today.
The Gatton Library Recreational Reading Collection features both fiction and non-fiction books, providing students with the opportunity to enhance their time at the campus
University of Queensland Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Margaret Gardner said reading for pleasure gives students the opportunity to learn about the experiences of others.
"Education is not just a formal process, we learn each and every day of our lives. The Recreational Reading Collection provides lessons about literature and life, enhances the literacy skills and awakens the imagination," Professor Gardner said.
"The Collection plays an important role in helping students to develop skills and knowledge beyond a specific disciplinary context and developing a culture of inquiry and innovation."
University of Queensland Librarian Janine Schmidt said the new volumes would add to the existing collection of approximately 45,500 books and 15,000 journal volumes at UQ Gatton as well as over 9000 electronic journals, 480 databases and 129,000 electronic books.
"Over half a million dollars have been spent in the last couple of years to upgrade the collections," Ms Schmidt said.
"The new Recreational Reading Collection will cover genres such as biography, sport, crime, romance and science fiction as well as many of the works of Bryce Courtenay, including his latest Four Fires."
The Collection was established by the University`s Gatton Campus, the Halls of Residence at UQ Gatton and the University of Queensland Library. It is located at the UQ Gatton library.
