A hundred years of the finest in French motoring will be showcased in the forecourt of the Forgan Smith building at The University of Queensland's St Lucia campus on Sunday, July 16.

Geoff Webber, a French car enthusiast employed in the University's Properties and Facilities Division, is on the organising committee for the event, held as part of Bastille Day celebrations.

He said the University venue had proven extremely popular with owners and visitors last year, and thanked Vice Chancellor Professor John Hay for again allowing the event to be held at the campus.

"It is a magnificent setting, and with the amount of publicity we have been getting I am sure we will get a big turnout, especially if the weather is kind to us," Mr Webber said.

"We had about 400 owners and enthusiasts and 137 cars last year, and it looks like we will have even larger numbers this year."

Among lovingly restored and maintained cars expected to be on show are a 1924 C4 Amilcar owned by David Lear of the Gold Coast, a 1909 Renault AX owned by Alan and Carolyn Robinson of Karana Downs and a 1922 B2 Citroen Tourer owned by Des Aston of Maleny.

"Another particular interesting feature will be a line-up of selected cars showing the progressive model developments of Renault, Peugeot and Citroen models that have been marketed in Australia," Mr Webber said.

"For example, the Citroens will start with a pre 1945 Traction Avante, followed by little 2CVs (deux chevaux), then the ID 19 "Goddess", which was voted Best Product and third best car of the 20th Century.

"Then there will be the DS23, which has lights that turn corners, followed by CX models, GS models and right up to present day Xantias and the Xsara."

Mr Webber said food with a French flavour and drinks would be available from 8am to 3pm.

Radio personalities and enthusiasts will provide expert commentary on the cars entered.

Cars will travel in a convoy to Park Road, Milton, for further Bastille festivities at 3pm.
