University of Queensland students will have a unique opportunity to meet with potential employers at the UQ Careers Fair on March 22.

Dean of Students Dr Lisa Gaffney said the first University-wide fair had attracted many major private industry and government employers who recognised the quality of UQ students.

"Employers recognise UQ as a first-class institution and know our students are of outstanding quality," she said.

"They are very enthusiastic to talk with UQ students. We are committed to meeting our students' needs and helping them make the transition from study to rewarding careers."

Employers attending the fair include QANTAS, Telstra, Ernst & Young, Brisbane City Council, Honeywell, Technology One, Deloittes Consulting, Alphapharm, The Institute of Engineers Australia, Macquarie Bank, The Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Queensland Audit Office, Arnott's and the Office of Economic and Statistical Research.

The Careers Fair will run from 11am to 6pm in Mayne Hall, St Lucia campus, where students will be able to speak with representatives of major companies and collect relevant literature.

The fair also aims to showcase the services offered at UQ to help students prepare for employment and to provide students with an opportunity to explore postgraduate study options.

On hand to advise students will be careers and employment counsellors from UQ's Student Support Services, Dean of Postgraduate Students Associate Professor Alan Lawson and UQ Union employment officer Julie Howes.

"The Fair will raise awareness of what students need to do to get a job, and will help them make useful contacts," Dr Gaffney said.

Dr Gaffney said she hoped postgraduate and undergraduate students from all courses would attend the Careers Fair, to take advantage of contact with companies offering employment in a wide range of fields.

The Careers Fair is a joint initiative of the Dean of Students, Student Support Services, the Dean of Postgraduate Students and the UQ Union employment officer.
