Study hots up over summer at UQ

Go somewhere different this summer - to the University of Queensland Summer Program, which offers something for everyone, regardless of tertiary or secondary educational background.

This year the University will provide three different programs - an Academic Summer Program, language courses through the Institute of Modern Languages (IML) and community education courses through the Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education (ICTE).

Give your brain an intellectual Christmas present, with the choice of more than 100 subjects in the Academic Summer Program, from art history to meditation, and from physical fitness to philosophy.

Summer Program co-ordinator Mardi Hardcastle said the academic program was open to a wide range of students, including people seeking professional development or a tertiary education experience. Prospective students without tertiary background should contact the relevant heads of departments to discuss eligibility and prerequisites.

The Academic Summer Program began in the mid-1980s as a means for students to accelerate their studies. It provides opportunities for the intensive study of undergraduate and postgraduate subjects, most of which normally take at least one standard semester to complete.

While the Academic Summer Program runs between December and February, commencement dates for some subjects vary. Enrolments close Friday, November 6.

The University's Summer Program will also feature community education short workshops and seminars on subjects covering the natural world, appreciating art or music, being creative, and creative writing and literature. If you can't afford the real thing, take the next best option and attend classes studying the Greek Islands, Florence, the most beautiful gardens of Tuscany, or the Ottoman cities of Istanbul and Bucharest.

The University's Institute of Modern Languages will also offer summer language courses for beginners to advanced students in Chinese (Mandarin), German, Italian, Korean, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian and Thai.

Summer Program handbooks with details of the academic, ICTE community education and IML language programs are available from the Enrolment section of the St Lucia campus (telephone 07 3365 9045) and from Customs House, Queen St, City. Internet enrolment for the Academic Summer Program only is available via SI-Net to UQ students who were enrolled during 1998. The URL for enrolment is: http://www.studentinfo.uq.edu.au
