Terrace old boy Ben White has been named the 1998 Queensland Rhodes Scholar.
The announcement was made today after finalists were interviewed by the Rhodes Scholar Selection Committee, chaired by the Governor Major General Peter Arnison, at the University of Queensland.
Mr White graduated with first-class honours in law from Queensland University of Technology in 1996 and is currently associate to the Supreme Court's Justice Williams.
An active sportsperson, Mr White, 22, was involved in cricket, mixed netball and basketball while at St Joseph's College. His most recent sports include kayaking and marathons.
Mr White said he was looking forward to studying for a MLitt in Law at Oxford University with a view to progressing to a DPhil.
He said he hoped to explore the relationship between law and society, with a particular emphasis on maximising the effectiveness of law reforms and its use as a tool of societal change.
On his return to Australia, Mr White hopes to work for the Queensland Law Reform Commission and explore its role in influencing the law.
