Event Description

Full Description:
This three-day research seminar presented by the UQ Node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, Europe 1100-1800, will explore the active role of arts and rhetoric in conditioning emotional experience in Europe from 1500 to 1800.
Topics will include: rhetoric as a mode of discipline and self-fashioning; the institutional formation of artistic and rhetorical practices; and the emergence of new affective genres and technologies.

The event brings together presenters from a range of fields, including literary criticism; drama and performance studies; intellectual history; art history; musicology; and cultural and political history.

The seminar will feature the first modern performance of Johann Christoph Pepusch’s Venus and Adonis, a 1715 masque with a libretto by Colley Cibber.
