Event Description

Full Description:
The presentation provides an opportunity to gain some insight into what goes on behind the scenes in elite classical music performance, and to enjoy the outstanding music-making of staff and students. The evening’s performances will reveal the sheer versatility of the Steinway Grand Piano; from the 18th century dance music of Bach, through the literary symbolism of Ravel’s French Impressionism, to the visceral evocation of war in Prokofiev’s 7th Piano Sonata. The program also includes heritage Australian music (excerpts from Percy Grainger’s beloved Lincolnshire Posy), and an innovative “speech melody” composition by UQ’s Rob Davidson featuring a recording of Percy Grainger’s voice accompanied by pianos.

This evening’s event highlights the collaborative possibilities that arise from placing a world-class instrument in the hands of our staff and students. Live performances will illustrate the way the next generation of pianists (our students) are being inspired by the instrument, and the way the piano plays an important role in solo performance, chamber music, composition and music performance research. The connection between excellent resources and excellent results will become clear in a stunning program of live performance and “behind the scenes” insights into the world of classical music.
