Event Description
- Full Description:
- The Centre for Marine Science (CMS) is glad to invite you to the 1st marine postgraduate student seminar of the semester, Tuesday 10th March, at 1pm, in Goddard (8) room 257.
Join us for two exciting talks from PhD students Davide Poli and Fahmi, bringing us from sponges holobionts to sharks speciation.
Daily and seasonal dynamics in a sponge holobiont microbial community
Davide Poli, PhD student - Biology
The stability of the relationship between sponge hosts and their microbial symbionts can be affected by environmental dynamicity and by the diversity of the microbial community itself. Together, these observations raise the hypothesis that microbial symbiont communities may vary on temporal scales that match the fluctuations of the environments in which the halobionts live. I will present the first step in testing this hypothesis using 16s rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of the microbiome of the coral reef sponge Amphimedon queenslandica.
Species or population? Determining species boundary of the brown-banded bamboo shark (Chiloscyllium punctatum) species complex
Fahmi, PhD student – Biology
Determining population-species boundaries is a major problem in modern taxonomy due in part to a choice of species concepts available. Recent genetic studies reveal more cryptic species complexes that may lead to over-splitting or species inflation in some groups of taxa, including elasmobranchs.
Here I investigated the presence of potential cryptic species and identified plausible speciation mechanisms in Chiloscyllium punctatum species complex using both genetics and morphological approaches.
We hope to see you there!
