Title: Structural Insights into Presynaptic Active Zone Assembly
Abstract: Neurotransmitter release relies on an highly specialized presynaptic terminal region, called the active zone. The active zone contains a large number of proteins, including adhesion molecules, receptors, adaptors and scaffolds, which are assembled to form the electron-dense material. How the active zone is assembled properly to fulfill its function and how the assembly is regulated remain elusive. Liprin-alpha, a synaptic scaffold, was found to play a critical role in active zone assembly, by recruiting numerous synaptic proteins. To understand the assembly mechanism of the active zone, we characterized liprin-alpha by combining structural biology, biochemistry and cell biology. Here, I will present our findings.
