Title: Measuring the effects of attention in human cortex using fMRI
Abstract: Perception does not arise solely from the passive processing of sensory information. Rather, there is also an active process, attention, that acts moment-by-moment to select or enhance behaviorally relevant information and to ignore or suppress irrelevant information. In this talk, I will discuss my experience using fMRI to measure the effects of attention in human cortex. I will discuss past work performed at 3T to investigate the effects of visual attention in multiple visual areas including the development of a novel technique to measure the profile of the attentional field using single voxel time-course modeling. I will also discuss current work being performed using the 7T MRI scanner here at The University of Queensland to acquire high-spatial-resolution measurements of the effects of tactile attention in somatosensory cortex.
