Event Description
- Full Description:
- During Dementia Awareness Month, and in association with our pilot 'Art and Dementia' program, please join Adriane Boag, author and dementia survivor Christine Bryden, Professor Elizabeth Coulson and A/Professor Christine Brown Wilson, in a conversation about ageing dementia, which is currently the second leading cause of death in Australia. Chaired by Gillian Ridsdale, Curator of Public Programs, the panel will discuss the latest research findings and the engagement programs that can support the quality of life for people diagnosed with this illness.
Adriane Boag is a Program Coordinator in Learning and Access at the National Gallery of Australia. These access programs include an intergenerational drawing program and tours for vision and hearing impaired visitors. She developed the NGA’s ‘Art and Dementia’ program in 2007, and manages the outreach training program, which has now been delivered to 25 regional and remote art galleries across Australia.
Christine Bryden was diagnosed with early onset dementia at age 46 in 1995, and given only a few years to live. She has now lived with that diagnosis for 20 years and is a passionate advocate for people with dementia and their carers. Her books have been translated into several languages, and in 2003 she became the first person with dementia to be elected to the Board of Alzheimer's Disease International. Her latest book is ‘Before I Forget’.
Professor Lizzie (Elizabeth) Coulson joined The University of Queensland as a founding member of the Queensland Brain Institute in 2003, following doctoral and postdoctoral study at the University of Melbourne and the University of Heidelberg, Germany. Her research on neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer’s Disease, seeks to increase our understanding of the prevention and treatment of dementia.
Associate Professor Christine Brown Wilson is Director of Teaching and Learning in the School of N ursing, Midwifery and Social Work, Faculty of Health and Behavioural Science, UQ. Christine is a registered nurse with an established research profile in ageing and dementia, with a focus on residential aged care and working collaboratively with older people, their families and staff to improve practice and quality of life.
Free. All welcome.
