Event Description
- Full Description:
- At this informal opening event for 'Cross Pose: Body language against the grain', please join artist Darren Siwes in conversation with exhibition curator Dr Sally Butler.
The 'Cross Pose' exhibition considers how Australian Indigenous artists have drawn on body language as a form of cross-cultural communication. The artworks declare their standpoint of Indigeneity, and draw attention to how the human figure in its various manifestations is a sensory mechanism that expresses ideas and meaning. We observe how body language often conveys a psychological or emotional condition that cannot be articulated in words. This theme of cross-cultural body language inevitably invokes the realm of body politics that first arose through second-wave feminism in the 1970s and evolved as racial body politics during the following decade. 'Cross Pose' thus takes a measure of how artists map the social and political regulation of the body, and how individuals push back against this control. Artists include Gordon Bennett, Michael Cook, Debbie Coombes, Destiny Deacon, Christopher Pease and Darren Siwes.
Free. All welcome.
The exhibition continues until 9 August 2015. Find out more http://www.artmuseum.uq.edu.au/coming-soon
