Event Description
- Full Description:
- Abstract: Isogeometric methods have emerged as the latest trend in simulation. Their attraction comes from the fact that geometrical data can be taken directly from a CAD program and accurate results can be achieved in a short time without the need to generate a mesh. The application of this method in geomechanics is relatively new. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate the advantages of the method. After a short and introduction into the method, practical examples in tunnelling are shown. Comparison with state of the art simulation methods show that not only mesh generation is avoided completely but that excellent results can be obtained with much fewer degrees of freedom and therefore numerical effort.
About the speaker: Prof. Gernot Beer has over 40 years of experience in numerical modelling. He has worked for CSIRO (division of geomechanics) and was professor and head of the institute for structural analysis at the Graz University of Technology, Austria. During this time he was the coordinator of TUNCONSTRUCT (Technology Innovation in Underground Construction) one of the largest integrated projects of the European Union (budget 26 Million Euro). He is still very active in research and currently coordinates a project in Austria on isogeometric modelling with one PhD student and one postdoc.
