Event Description

Full Description:
In association with the exhibition 'Danie Mellor: Exotic Lies and Scared Ties', this panel discussion considers contemporary Indigenous cultural practice and reflects on our understanding of the past. How do audiences engage with the narrative of contemporary Indigenous art? Is there a shared dialogue that intersects with other forms of contemporary Indigenous creative expression? Please join panellists Wesley Enoch, Bruce McLean, Danie Mellor and chair Rhianna Patrick as they explore these issues and offer their insights.

Panellists:

Wesley Enoch is Artistic Director of Queensland Theatre Company, a renowned playwright and director for the stage. He hails from Stradbroke Island (Minjeribah) and is a proud Noonuccal Nuugi man.

Bruce McLean is a member of the Wierdi people of the Birri Gubba Nation of Wribpid, Central Queensland. He currently holds the position of Curator, Indigenous Australian Art at the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art. Bruce has curated a number of exhibitions for QAGOMA including 'My Country, I Still Call Australia Home: Contemporary Art from Black Australia' in 2013. In 2002 he was awarded the NAIDOC National Aboriginal Youth of the Year.

Danie Mellor explores historical intersections and relationships between Indigenous and Western cultures. His work has been consistently shown in significant exhibitions in regional, state and national galleries, and is represented in most permanent national, state and also private collections in Australia and overseas. http://daniemellor.com/portfolio/?page_id=166
