 Cycling FAQ at UQ

We have compiled this page to help with frequently asked questions regarding cycling and relevant facilities at UQ.

In addition, UQ Traffic & Parking have provided the following "Cycling at UQ" web pages: http://www.uq.edu.au/cycling/index.html

...within these pages, is a "Map of Cycling Facilities at UQ", that can be found here: http://www.uq.edu.au/cycling/index.html?page=54605&pid=54612

If you have a question that needs answering ...drop us a line at uqbug@uq.edu.au

Q1. How Do I gain Access to a Secure Bicycle Storage Room...

A1. Access to the Secure Bicycle Storage Rooms (SBSR’s) at St Lucia campus is provided by UQ Security via swipe card access using your smart encoded Staff or Student ID card.

Locations of St Lucia SBSR's at can be found on the Cycling at UQ website.... http://www.uq.edu.au/cycling/index.html?page=54612&pid=0

The Following is a guide to access...
  • Security will only encode and activate staff and student smart cards for access to SBSR’s
  • First time activation and encoding of a smart card requires Security to have physical possession of the card for 3 days.
  • The delay of three days seems to be non-negotiable to allow processing by the encoding staff in security.
  • Whilst cards are being issued with “Smart Encoded” written on the bottom of the card, this is only an indicator that they are capable of being encoded with the pre-existence of a chip, but are not yet encoded with UQ’s system.
  • After the very first time a card is encoded to comply with the UQ swipe card system, the card can then be activated for subsequent swipe card entries without further encoding.
  • Subsequent activations can be done with an email request for activation, which does not require security to have physically possession of the card.

  • If your staff / student card has undergone its first encoding and activation process for a separate swipe card access, then activation of swipe card access to SBSR’s is a simple matter of emailing security at swipecards@pf.uq.edu.au with following details:
    • Your name
    • code number written on back of card by security as part of encoding process
    • request to provide access to the Secure Bicycle Storage Rooms at St Lucia campus
      • Security will activate your card for all general access SBSR’s with the one activation.

Q2. How Do I gain Access to Lockers for Clothes Storage...

A2. Access to lockers is currently limited to those who occupy buildings which make lockers available for their occupants. Lockers currently in or near secure bike storage rooms have been provided for the building occupants only.

The UQBUG team is working with UQ Traffic & Parking to accommodate cyclists using the secure lockup rooms with lockers.

A budget allocation may be available for the provisioning of lockers in 2010, but we require support from cyclists to ensure this happens.

You can contribute ...to making sure the Locker Budget is not re-allocated by emailing the UQBUG (uqbug@uq.edu.au) with a breif note in support of lockers for UQ Cyclists.
