Why study the Master of Data Science?

There is a significant and ongoing growth in the demand for Data Scientists globally. Data Science is an exciting new area of study that is applicable in a large number of industry sectors such as health, energy, finance, manufacturing, as well as in government. The Data Science program at The University of Queensland will be the first in Australia to offer an advanced level of computing, statistics, mathematics and business knowledge applied in industry, government, social and scientific contexts and balanced with essential attributes relevant to data science including the ethical use of data, legal considerations for data science, business communication, hands-on experience with relevant big data tools and technologies, and creative and disruptive thinking applied to complex problems. As data underpins the digital economy, there are enormous opportunities for data scientists to revolutionise the way we work, live and communicate. There is a skills shortage and a marked increase in demand for highly competent data scientists as more and more data is created every day. Master of Data Science graduates will be expertly prepared to work in Australia or overseas across a large number of industry sectors, government agencies, high technology companies, as well as consulting and market research firms.

Program Rules and Requirements

To complete the Master of Data Science

To complete the Master of Data Science, a student must complete a requisite number of courses chosen from the course list and according to the Rules for the program.

Students should be aware of the University of Queensland rules, particularly the General Award Rules, which govern the conduct of UQ programs. Students will find a link to the General Award Rules, and other University rules, on the University Rules page.

To complete the 24-unit program, a student must complete 24 units in accordance with the MDataSc program course list.
