The latest piece of research on the dishonest crayfish of Nth Stradbroke Island has been published in the high profileJournal of Experimental Biology. This research shows that males have much more unpredictable claw strengths than females, further suggesting males routinely utilize dishonest signals of strength while females do not. Maybe some will consider this just another case of the fairer sex being, well, fairer!! But, we’ll wait for further work on other species of crayfish before making such generalisations. Anyway, we also found there were substantial locomotor costs associated with possessing large claws, but this was for males only. Our work has received widespread media attention and you can see a brief media release in the JEB Highlights section or you can Google “crafty crayfish cheats” to see the myriad of media references to the work.
