Research Interests

I’m investigating the influence of geographical variation on the thermal dependence of performance in Pacific blue-eyes. I want to compare the shape of their thermal dependence curves to find their maximum performance level and the temperature this occurs at, as well as assessing the breadth of temperatures they perform well over. I expect differences in each of these characteristics depending on the range and variability of their natural environments. So, to measure their environmental conditions I have data loggers recording the water temperature every two hours at each site. Later I hope to correlate this data to the performance of the fish. I expect that fish living in haphazard temperate conditions will have a broad curve, demonstrating their ability to perform over a large range of temperatures, whereas fish from an environment with reliable cues about temperature changes will have a narrow curve. I expect that the cost of performing over a large range of temperatures will be a low level of performance where the more specialised, tropical populations will have a very high level of performance but only over a small range.
