Event Description

Full Description:
Hi everyone!

Hope this finds you well.
The Centre for Marine Science is happy to invite you to the first marine postgraduate seminar of Semester 2, next Tuesday 10th August at 1pm.
The seminar will be held on Zoom. Please register in advance for this meeting: https://uqz.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEsfu2prDsqG9KQ07-4qyxOB9wqe86qCpw-

We will be joined by two speakers: PhD students Asia Haines, from the UQ School of Biomedical Sciences, and Emma Marangon, from James Cook University/Australian Institute of Marine Science. Join us in exploring manta ray feeding behaviour and in the analysis of host-associated microbiome responses to climate change!

1) Manta rays forage on dense zooplankton patches in Hanifaru Bay, Maldives

Asia Haines, PhD candidate (UQ SBMS)

This study investigates the food environment at the largest known feeding aggregation of reef manta rays in the world. We found zooplankton biomass changed rapidly throughout the tidal cycle, and manta rays switched from non-feeding to feeding behaviour at high prey densities. The dominant zooplankton species recorded was a large-bodied copepod species that blooms in oceanic waters, suggesting offshore influences at the site.

2) Microbiome dynamics across host generations and climate treatments in a model reef species

Emma Marangon, PhD candidate (AIMS@JCU)

Climate change is a major threat to reef species. Despite the fundamental contribution of microbes to host health, microbiome dynamics across host generations remain poorly understood in most reef species, especially in the context of climate change. In my talk, I will explore microbial changes across life stages in the tropical sea urchin Echinometra sp. A exposed to ocean warming and acidification over a 4-year multigenerational experiment.

We hope to see you on Zoom next Tuesday!
Cheers,
The Centre for Marine Science
