Event Description

Full Description:
Topic: Safety Culture
Facilitators: Luke Welch - HSW Adviser (Safety Culture), HSW Division
Recommended for: Safety Managers/WHSCs, HSW Division, HSW Committee Members

There is a strong legal, strategic, and financial business case for safe and healthy work. Improving our safety performance protects UQ and its employees from adverse events, and can also increase productivity, performance, and wellbeing.
As we reach a ‘safety plateau’ the challenge – and opportunity – is to now move beyond compliance. It is important to remain vigilant given improved safety statistics, because “it is very dangerous to think that an organization is safe because no information is saying otherwise, but it is also very easy” (Reason, 1998). In this interactive seminar, we will cover:
• When we invest our personal time and effort into safety, what do we get in return?
• What tools do we have to manage safety at UQ?
• What is working really well?
• What typically gets invested in when it comes to health and safety at UQ?
• Where is the next major incident likely to come from?
Also see attached an optional reading from Safety Science, which highlights the need for further high-quality experimental research on safety culture interventions.
