- Modest Musorgsky is perhaps best known for his instrumental works Night on Bare Mountain and Pictures at an Exhibition.

However, Musorgsky was also one of the nineteenth century’s most gifted writers of art song. This concert includes a number of individual songs and two of the composer’s song cycles—Sunless and Songs and Dances of Death. Musorgsky himself saw his artistic mission to be one of sincere communication with people and this idea is at the heart of all his songs, which range from humour to despair, from the most subjective intimacy to almost theatrical grandiloquence. In preparing this program Shaun and Simon’s interpretation is informed by access to Musorgsky’s own manuscripts, housed in the St Petersburg Public Library, which show subtle but often telling points of difference from published sources.
