Event Description

Full Description:
UQ Safe Work Month: Hot Topic Discussions!
Join Health, Safety and Wellness Division in this UQ Safe Work Month Hot Topic presentation.
Each presentation will run for 15 minutes.
Presenter 1: Katrina Geary (UQBR)

Topic: The UQ Biological Resources Unit (UQBR) provides centralised services to the biomedical research community. With over 100 professional staff, and 16 facilities across 5 UQ campuses the size of UQBR warrants a central approach for the management of restricted and controlled drugs.
This talk will cover the journey from review to the final outcomes that we hope will align with future requirements of substance management plans.

Presenter 2: Alan Victor (SEES)
Topic: UQSafe-Field – What relevant data the Leader has to include so that Peer Reviewer’s and Supervisor’s know you have considered all aspects of the field trip.
UQSafe-Risk – What relevant data the Risk Owner has to include so that Peer Reviewer’s and Supervisor’s know that all the hazards with Medium-High risks have been identified and adequate controls applied to produce a residual LOW risk.

Presenter 3: Maria Somodevilla Torres (HSW)
Topic: Laboratory signage, is there a clutter issue?
Work areas such as research laboratories expose workers to a variety of hazards with different risk levels. Providing adequate safety in these environments is an extremely complicated exercise that can only be achieved with adequate training as well as effective visual signage.
'Safety clutter' is an issue in laboratories, signage brings a lot of clutter into the workplace and there is far too much reliance on signage to raise awareness of hazards and issues. Key points on what to look for and improve in your workplace will be presented.

Take aways/learnings:
What factors are important for a sign?
Is the signage at my workplace according to standards and best practice?
How clutter can affect the delivery of a safety message based on signage alone.
